This is tales from the couch, inspired by one of my favorite Ryen Rusillo segments, but I will be going over what I watched in week one of college football in order by time. So, lets begin with...
TCU vs. Colorado
Are the Buffs back? I'm going to play devil's advocate and push back on what seemingly 99% of the media wants to say- Still not sold on this team, but they are certainly a lot better than I anticipated. Shedeur Sanders was unbelievable, throwing for the most passing yards in a game in Colorado history. They had 4(!!!) receivers go for over 100 yards, the most I can remember since the USC teams with Pittman, Drake London, and Amon-Ra. But man, did that TCU defense look.... not good. That's why I am pumping the brakes, also in part to TCU tearing up the Colorado defense, and I get HC Sonny Dykes is an excellent play caller, but I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a big fan of QB Chandler Morris and they still put up a ton of yards and points. Colorado's big test will be the Oregon/USC games, I do not expect Nebraska next week to show us much in terms of if this Colorado team is actually legit.
Tennessee vs. Virginia
Not a whole lot here, as QB Joe Milton did not wow me and I'm not gonna be mean but I don't expect UVA to win a whole lot of games this year. But I will say, I was impressed with Tennessee's defense. Think it should be improved from last year.
Fresno State vs. Purdue
This game probably was not watched by many, but it was fun!! From what I saw, new Fresno QB Mikey Keene was electric. He was a ton of fun to watch in that offense. With HC Tedford, they will still continue to be a force this year in the MW. Purdue's first game under new HC Ryan Walters was not ideal, but I still liked overall how they looked. I think QB Hudson Card is a really solid option there, and I think this is a pretty decent big ten team. Purdue vs. Virginia Tech this week should be a sneaky fun one.
Ohio State vs. Indiana
I know it was game one but my goodness, did neither QB look ready at all. Obviously the floor is still incredible high, as McCord could poorly game manage them to 8 or 9 wins. But, one of the two QBs is gonna have to grow up fast. Defense looked very good against a not great IU offense, but this win did not inspire any more confidence in another OSU CFB appearance.
Washington vs. Boise State
This Washington offense MOVES. So much fun to watch. Penix is a relentless attacker down the field. Boise looked like they were gonna hang for about a quarter and a half, and then its like you looked up and it was basically over. Not sure Washington's defense can hang, but the offense is must watch and they are going to have a great shot at the Pac title. As for Boise, they should still cruise through most of the MW due to how much more physical and athletic they are, but I was not in love with QB Taylen Green, (also, how the hell is George Holani still in college? He has been their running back FOREVER).
Texas vs. Rice
Speaking of an offense that moves, how about Texas? That offense is gonna be a ton of fun, and it took a little bit, but the weapons at Ewers' disposal is lethal. Nothing much else to say here, Texas vs. Alabama this week is gonna be special.
UNC vs. South Carolina
This game was a ton of fun, but I want to talk about Drake Maye first. Simply put, he is awesome. He is an elevator of talent, with the ability to work in and out of the offensive script. But, lets not act like he should be the top QB in this upcoming draft. He is just simply not as good as Caleb Williams as of right now. But as for UNC, they might be very good?? I understand SC's offensive line is a weak point, but UNC's defense capitalized and did a great job not letting Spencer Rattler get into a rhythm. They could very well be in the running for an ACC title appearance, but they will have to be very close to perfect in ACC play, I think they can do it.
Penn State vs. West Virginia
Biggest takeaway for me is Drew Allar might be a dude. That throw early in the game when he stepped up in the pocket and threw a 45 yard dart on the move was beautiful. He is not there just yet though, there was still some mistakes on his end. But, he is clearly a special talent and has a bright future. WVU's Neal Brown seat is still scorching hot, and I do not think it is gonna cool off any time soon. Last note, how about that all-time cover from Penn State? I have never seen a coach do that considering the score and situation. It benefitted me greatly so James Franklin is in my good graces.
Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion
Not a lot to report here from me, but VT could definitely be in the "frisky" category this year. Still not a big believer in QB Grant Wells, but I think he is good enough. Like I stated earlier, this weekend's game against Purdue will be a good bench mark.
UCLA vs. Coastal Carolina
Start Dante Moore. All I have to say here. No two QB nonsense, start Moore, he is electric.
Northwestern vs. Rutgers
Not a lot here, except for how bad is Northwestern going to be? Like are we sure they are winning a game? Could this be an all time bad P5 team?
FSU vs. LSU
Top game of the weekend sort of lived up to the billing. A sloppy first half had the game close, but FSU absolutely dominated the second half. FSU wideout Keon Coleman is a STAR. The Michigan State transfer had three touchdowns, first FSU receiver since Auden Tate in 2017 (If you know who this is and you aren't a FSU fan, props to you). As Mike Norvell said, I do not think we saw FSU's best there, which is dangerous. Their secondary concerns me in terms of being an elite group, but the talent level at all other positions' starters is really really scary. FSU's health will be key, but when healthy, this team could very easily run the table and get to the playoff. My biggest thing for LSU is what are they doing with Harold Perkins? Feels like it is Micah Parsons all over again. I believe it was 28 off ball snaps to 10 pass rush snaps. Seriously, coaches, why do we do this? Jaydon Daniels impressed me, I will say. He was very dynamic in the run and pass game. This LSU team will still be very good, but I don't think they pack enough of a punch to run the table from here on out. Who knows, they could very easily prove me wrong.
Writing this as the Clemson and Duke game is going on, but I am going to go ahead and post this. Looks like this game could be a really good one. I am going to try and do this weekly, a goal I am setting for myself.
